The Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), a Tanzanian institution for higher technical training, was established by Act of Parliament No. 6 of 1997. In order to satisfy societal demands, DIT aims to establish itself as a leading provider of technical education. DIT uses training, research, innovation, and the development of appropriate technologies to provide competency-based technical education. DIT is a customer-focused, progressive university that encourages industrialization.

In order to offer post-FTC technical training, the college later launched Diploma in Engineering (DE) programs in the four conventional engineering specializations. 1962 saw the introduction of Laboratory Technology courses and Diploma in Technical Education (DTE) programs. When the Diploma in Engineering (DE) courses were replaced with the matching Advanced Diploma in Engineering (ADE) programs in 1991, DTC’s standing as a provider of higher technical education was solidified. Nearly all engineering businesses and organizations now employ DIT, DE, and ADE graduates. Positive comments from the right employers show that ADE graduates have performed well all around.

The National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) has granted DIT full accreditation. At the moment, DIT provides a large selection of professional applied sciences and engineering training courses and programs, both full-time and part-time. The Ordinary Diploma and Bachelor of Engineering degrees offered by the Institute have taken the place of the FTC and ADE programs, respectively.

The Institute now offers a Bachelor of Technology in Laboratory Sciences in addition to several master’s level programs, including a Master of Technology in Computing and Communications, a Master of Engineering in Maintenance Management, a Master of Engineering in Computational Science and Engineering, and a Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy Engineering. In addition, certificate programs in biotechnology, food science and technology, multimedia and film technology, and information communication technology are offered, along with bachelor’s degrees in mining engineering and oil and gas.

The academic programs that DIT now offers are summarized in this prospectus, together with upcoming initiatives that will help the institute achieve its training objective. In chapters three and four, respectively, it also discusses the guidelines governing admission to these programs and the related costs. The examination rules, which include all aspects of the exams given by the Institute for Ordinary Diploma, Bachelor Degree, and Master Degree programs—programs that lead to the awarding of NTAs 4–9 levels—are contained in Chapter 5. The postgraduate guidelines contain more information about DIT’s master’s degree program provision methods.
