Job Purpose

The Branch Manager will be responsible for growing insurance and other corporate business within the branch catchment area. The role involves supervising day-to-day branch operations, including underwriting, claims, and administrative functions. The position reports directly to the Country Sales Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Business Growth and Revenue Management

  • Achieve branch revenue targets as agreed from time to time
  • Implement targeted business development initiatives to drive product lines
  • Identify and develop new distribution outlets
  • Gather market intelligence to support competitive strategy development
  • Manage sales costs to ensure revenue growth and product profitability

Branch Operations and Administration

  • Coordinate and supervise branch staff in line with company policies and procedures
  • Oversee underwriting, claims, and administrative functions
  • Ensure accurate, competitive, and timely preparation of quotations
  • Manage all branch expenses to ensure optimal use of company resources
  • Prepare weekly and monthly production reports
  • Maintain effective communication with top management through regular reporting

Underwriting and Claims Management

  • Undertake initial underwriting to ensure sound risk acceptance
  • Provide high-quality underwriting services to minimize losses and improve profitability
  • Ensure consistent, timely underwriting services to clients, agents, brokers, and sales teams
  • Manage branch claims and ensure acceptable loss ratios
  • Identify and manage claims service stakeholders in line with Britam quality standards
  • Provide quality claims management services to enhance competitive advantage

Sales Channels and Stakeholder Management

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with agents, banks, brokers, and sales force executives
  • Ensure excellent customer service to existing and prospective clients
  • Train intermediaries on general insurance products
  • Manage incentives and performance of agents and sales force executives
  • Control debtors’ ratio through timely premium collection

People Management and Leadership

  • Participate in recruitment, appraisal, and training of branch staff
  • Train, develop, and motivate employees to maximize performance
  • Champion supervision and effective utilization of sales tools
  • Deliver performance targets as defined in the balanced scorecard and personal scorecard

Delegated Authority

  • Operate within the approved Delegated Authority Matrix

Key Performance Measures

  • Performance measured as outlined in the Personal Scorecard

Qualifications and Experience

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business, or a related field
  • Professional insurance qualification (CII Certificate)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of seven years’ experience in insurance, banking, or financial services
  • At least two years at a supervisory or management level
  • Proven experience in sales training
  • Strong stakeholder management experience
