Research Coordinator at MUHAS – Global Injury Group Project 2026

Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) is inviting applications from suitably qualified Tanzanian candidates for a Research Coordinator position under a two-year research project in collaboration with the University of Oxford, University of Cape Town and Malawi University through the Global Injury Group. The position is based within the Department of Orthopaedic, Traumatology and Neurosurgery and focuses on musculoskeletal injury care pathways and healthcare experiences in Tanzania.

The project uses qualitative and ethnographic research methods to understand how patients, healthcare workers, caregivers and community-based healthcare practitioners experience and navigate musculoskeletal injury care. The successful candidate will coordinate research activities, manage fieldwork and qualitative data, contribute to analysis and reporting, and work with national and international research teams to ensure the study is conducted ethically and according to approved research protocols.

Research Coordinator – 1 Position

The Research Coordinator will plan and coordinate qualitative and ethnographic research activities throughout the project. This is a full-time, project-based contractual position for a period of two years.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate and implement qualitative and ethnographic research activities.
• Recruit and engage research participants.
• Conduct in-depth interviews and focus group discussions.
• Carry out observational fieldwork in accordance with the study protocol.
• Organize research visits, fieldwork schedules, travel arrangements and other data collection logistics.
• Transcribe qualitative interviews and focus group discussions according to established research procedures.
• Manage qualitative research data and maintain accurate research records.
• Conduct qualitative data analysis, including coding and development of themes or categories.
• Contribute to the interpretation of research findings within a multidisciplinary research team.
• Prepare clear and high-quality research reports.
• Contribute to academic publications arising from the research project.
• Participate actively in research team meetings.
• Take a leadership role in research activities when required.
• Ensure research activities comply with approved protocols, ethical requirements, research governance standards and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
• Travel to research sites, including locations requiring overnight stays, when necessary for fieldwork and project activities.
• Assist with project-related cash or financial matters when required.
• Perform other research-related duties assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience Required

• Master of Public Health (MPH).
• Master of Pharmacy.
• MSc in Health Economics and Policy.
• MSc in Applied Epidemiology.
• MSc in Epidemiology and Laboratory Management.
• MSc in Project Management, Monitoring and Evaluation in Health.
• MSc in Clinical Psychology.
• Master in Social and Behaviour Change for Health.
• Master of Global Health.
• Doctor of Medicine (MD).
• Bachelor of Pharmacy.
• Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences.
• Bachelor of Science in Medical Psychology.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
• Bachelor of Science in Midwifery.
• Relevant qualification must be obtained from a recognized and reputable university.
• At least 3–5 years of experience in health research.
• Knowledge of qualitative health research methodologies.
• Knowledge of research ethics and ethical principles.
• Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
• Experience using qualitative data management and analysis software such as NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA or similar platforms is desirable.
