About the Role
The purpose of the role is to design, plan, and optimize drilling and blasting operations within an open-pit mining environment to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective fragmentation of rock. By applying technical expertise to create precise blast patterns and timing sequences, the engineer ensures that fragmented material meets the required specifications for loading, hauling, and crushing equipment while maintaining the structural integrity of the pit walls. The role is responsible for mitigating operational risks such as vibration, air blast, and fly rock to ensure full compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards.
Responsibilities
- Design drill and blast pattern as per approved standards
- Monitor and report compliance to Drill and Blast Standards
- Monitor and review Blast data from production drilling, bulk explosive loading, and blasting
- Coordination and review of QA/QC, including use, blast vibration monitoring, fragmentation analysis, video camera, ability to dig material, dilution and ore loss from blasting
- Initiate and involve in drill and blast projects
- End of the month calculation and provide drill and blast data as required to other departments
- Monitor powder factors, bulk explosives and consumables usage against budget
- Assist with incident investigations involving explosive usage including misfires, fly rock and excessive blast vibrations
- Ability to apply safety and health policies and procedures in the workplace
- Ability to conduct drill and blast cost planning as well as reconciliation of performance against plans
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering
- Valid blasting certificate is a Must
- Ability to drive a manual light vehicle (LV) with a valid Tanzania driving license (an added advantage)
- At least THREE (3) year in a large open mining operation/ environment
- Proficient in the use of specialized drill and blasting software (Vulcan)Shotplus design software
- Blast IQ Skills
- Demonstrate knowledge of explosive handling, storage and regulations
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of blasting techniques
