NBC Tanzania is seeking a Manager Agribusiness to lead the growth and profitability of its Agribusiness Retail portfolio. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and executing agribusiness strategies, driving portfolio expansion, managing credit quality, strengthening stakeholder partnerships, and leading a high-performing team to deliver innovative agricultural financing solutions while ensuring sound governance and risk management.
Responsibilities
- Drive sustainable growth, profitability, diversification, and market penetration of the Agribusiness Retail portfolio
- Oversee all commercial activities of the Agribusiness Retail business, including timely processing, approval, and disbursement of agricultural loan facilities
- Ensure lending activities align with agricultural production cycles and customer requirements
- Monitor portfolio performance and coordinate with Cluster Heads to achieve approved business targets and budgets
- Prepare annual growth plans, business strategies, and budgets for the Agribusiness Retail Unit
- Coordinate implementation of business plans to achieve agreed financial and operational objectives
- Review credit appraisals prepared by Relationship Managers and Business Development Officers and provide technical guidance on appropriate lending structures
- Present and defend credit applications before Credit Teams and relevant approval authorities
- Drive portfolio expansion while maintaining high portfolio quality through effective monitoring and risk management
- Develop and implement Agribusiness Retail strategies to achieve quarterly and annual business objectives
- Identify opportunities across agricultural value chains to expand the portfolio and promote cross-selling of banking products and services
- Lead the development of innovative agribusiness financing solutions to meet customer needs
- Provide strategic leadership and direction to team members to ensure alignment with business priorities and performance objectives
- Benchmark departmental productivity against industry standards and implement continuous improvement initiatives
- Set performance targets and take overall accountability for achieving Agribusiness Retail business objectives
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with government institutions, development partners, guarantors, donors, and other stakeholders to promote agricultural sector growth and financial inclusion
- Collaborate with Product Development, Business Units, and internal stakeholders to design and launch new agribusiness products and services
- Promote teamwork and collaboration across departments to deliver integrated agricultural value chain solutions
- Ensure compliance with credit policies, regulatory requirements, internal controls, and governance standards
- Maintain strong portfolio quality by proactively managing credit risk and implementing mitigation strategies
- Coordinate preparation and submission of reports required by guarantors, donors, development partners, and other external stakeholders
- Supervise the preparation and review of Management Information System (MIS) reports and recommend corrective actions where necessary
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of Agribusiness Retail business performance to internal and external stakeholders
- Monitor compliance with approved credit processes and recommend improvements where required
- Periodically review portfolio performance and recommend strategies to improve growth, profitability, asset quality, and operational efficiency
- Review Agribusiness credit applications and recommend approval or rejection in accordance with the bank’s credit policies, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements
- Prepare and present portfolio performance reports covering portfolio growth, quality, risk indicators, and business performance to support strategic decision-making
Qualifications Required
- First degree or equivalent qualification in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, or a related field
- Master’s degree in Agriculture is an added advantage
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the agribusiness sector
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in credit appraisal and credit risk assessment
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a managerial position
- Sound knowledge of agribusiness value chains and agricultural financing models
- Strong knowledge of credit analysis, appraisal, and portfolio management
- Good understanding of banking products and services, particularly agribusiness products
- Strong knowledge of business and commercial banking operations
- Risk management and portfolio monitoring expertise
- Demonstrated leadership and people management skills
- Excellent negotiation, selling, and presentation skills
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management abilities
- Comprehensive understanding of the agribusiness sector, agricultural value chains, and government policies supporting agricultural development and financing
- Knowledge of Bank of Tanzania (BoT) regulations and regulatory requirements governing banking operations
- Understanding of internal banking policies, procedures, governance, and risk management frameworks
- Practical experience in structuring agricultural financing solutions, including value chain financing, contract farming, warehouse receipt financing, and related financing structures
- Strong commercial mindset with digital literacy and innovation capabilities
- Experience working in a similar banking environment at junior management level
- Strong analytical, research, reasoning, planning, and decision-making skills
- Demonstrated openness to change, continuous learning, and personal development

- Successful candidate will lead the Agribusiness Retail portfolio and support strategic business growth initiatives across the agricultural sector
- Position requires close collaboration with internal business units, government agencies, development partners, and external stakeholders
- Candidate must demonstrate strong leadership, sound credit judgment, and commitment to sustainable agricultural financing
- Regular engagement with stakeholders and travel may be required to support business development and portfolio management activities
