Field Intern
Job Description
The Field Intern will support the implementation of community-based agriculture, nutrition, and rural development activities under the NOURISH Project in Songwe and Rukwa regions. The role focuses on working directly with farmers, community groups, local leaders, and extension officers to deliver project interventions, promote sustainable farming practices, strengthen market access, support data collection, and contribute to improving food security and livelihoods. This position offers practical field experience in agricultural development, community engagement, monitoring, and project implementation.
Responsibilities:
- Support implementation of agriculture and nutrition activities in assigned communities, including training and follow-up sessions.
- Mobilize farmers, community groups, and local stakeholders to participate in project activities, demonstrations, meetings, and training programs.
- Assist with community-level planning, establishment, and monitoring of demonstration plots and farmer learning activities.
- Promote good agricultural practices, horticulture activities, and nutrition-sensitive approaches at the community level.
- Support Village Savings and Lending Associations (VSLA) development and facilitate access to financial services.
- Assist in collecting market information and identifying opportunities for market linkages.
- Support market systems strengthening and connections between farmers and service providers.
- Work closely with community leaders, extension officers, and project teams to strengthen local participation.
- Provide logistical and administrative support during field visits, meetings, and community engagements.
- Collect project data using approved tools and verify information from beneficiaries and project sites.
- Enter and update project data accurately in databases and tracking systems.
- Support data cleaning, basic analysis, and preparation of summaries for reporting purposes.
- Assist in preparing field reports, activity updates, beneficiary records, and routine project documentation.
- Participate in community feedback sessions and document lessons learned, observations, and success stories.
- Identify risks and challenges affecting value chain activities and recommend practical solutions.
- Observe field trends and provide information to support learning and programme improvement.
Qualifications:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in General Agriculture, Crop Science, Horticulture, Nutrition, Community Development, or a related agricultural field.
- One to two years of relevant experience in agriculture, nutrition, or rural development projects.
- Previous internship or volunteer experience in related sectors is acceptable.
- Experience working with communities, farmer groups, or rural households.
- Understanding of field activity implementation, farmer mobilization, and extension support services.
- Skills in data collection, data entry, basic analysis, and report writing.
- Knowledge of agriculture, horticulture, and nutrition-sensitive approaches is an added advantage.
- Basic knowledge of climate-smart, regenerative, or sustainable agriculture practices is desirable.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
- Computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Word, Excel, and digital data management tools.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and community engagement skills.
- Willingness to work extensively in rural and remote communities.
- Proactive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to creating positive community impact.
